Immersive Storytelling and Dynamic Choices in Telltale's Batman Series

Publisher: Telltale Games

Developer:  Telltale Games

Also available on: PlayStation, PC, Phone, Nintendo Switch

This was my first Telltale series game to try. It's basically choosing your answer from the dialogue options provided, and the options you choose affect the outcome of the whole story. There is more to it, though, and you have some missions where you can walk around yourself and use your bat-tools like the scanner, etc. The combat in the game is done by QTEs (pressing the corresponding button shown on screen).

The combat flows together very well, and if you miss one button prompt, you will be hit or sometimes killed and have to retry. The graphics are animation style, i.e., cartoon style, and it fits well with the story as it makes it feel as if you're playing a Batman comic, but one in which you decide the fate of Gotham and its citizens and also what kind of Batman to become.

You can be a good, by-the-book Batman or be a more dark, take-no-prisoners kind of Batman. Characters you'll meet include Harvey Dent, Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, Vicki Vale, and many more. Your story and choices carry on to the next game as well. The game has some replayability thanks to the multiple choices provided. At the end of each chapter, you get a screen showing you what the most popular choices among players worldwide were, what you picked, and how certain characters feel about you currently.

Good points:

+Great voice acting

+Good story

+Lots of varied choices

+Feels like a comic/cartoon batman

+It's free to play now

Bad points:

-Some 'choices' are forced so not free choice

-If you try to solve all problems with smart outside the box thinking the game wont allow that and some characters will still hate you or suffer etc

-I should be allowed ultimate choice for every decision

-Replaying some parts are lengthy and annoying to do again

Grade: C+

It is very fun and feels like a batman comic/cartoon, but not letting us have free choice for ALL things is a big minus point.
