Embark on an Epic Adventure in a Shared Open World Pirate Game

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Developer:  Rare

Also available on: PlayStation, PC

Ahoy there! This is an online shared open world pirate game in which you design your own pirate character and then choose a boat to sail the ocean with. There are currently 3 ships to choose from; The Galleon, the Brigantine, and the Sloop. The Galleon is the biggest ship and is used for more than 3 players, you can solo it but it is harder to control and it takes longer to rig the sails etc. The Brigantine is a medium sized ship and is used for 3 players and the Sloop is a small ship that is for solo players or 2 people; The only downside is having just two cannons to use for defence.

On board the ships you will find barrels to store food, wood, and cannonballs inside. Food is used to heal damage, wood is used to repair the ship from holes to stop water flooding in. and the cannonballs are fired from the cannons at other ships or pirates or even skeletons; but there is many different types of cannonball including cursed variants. There is also different types of food and some you can even cook like fish. Fishing is one of the things that were added much later to the game and you can use different bait and catch a wide variety of fish to cook or sell. You can also sell them cooked too for an increased profit.

You start each session at a random outpost. The outposts are filled with shops and companies with whom you pay some gold coins to select voyages to undertake. They are the Gold Hoarders, for digging up assorted chests using treasure maps or clues that you have to decipher. The Merchant Alliance which is for delivering cargo such as bottles, cloth and plants, or for capturing and delivering animals to another NPC in a certain amount of time. The Order Of Souls are voyages that require you to kill skeletons and skeleton captains and bring back their skulls. There is a Hunters company for selling fishes.

Tall Tales voyages that are quite lengthy and unique(like a story mode). There are also things like sharks, megalodons, krakens, volcanoes, skeleton ships and storms to watch out for. Money earned can be used for buying different skinned weapons, gear, clothing and ship decorations. Pets such as monkeys or parrots can be bought using a different currency that you can find rarely in the game(Coin skeletons).

Good Points:

+Graphics, lighting and sound effects

+Voyages are fun

+Realistic sailing

+Can be a chilled out experience or hectic(PvP)

+Game is constantly updated with new things

+Many different islands to visit

Bad Points:

-Being killed by other players after hours of doing voyages just to have everything stolen is not fun

-Still no option to turn off PvP damage which is included in nearly all massive online games, (they added PVE mode now but with no other players and less rewards which isn't the same.)

Grade: A-

Fantastic large open seas to explore and its a fun and chilled experience but it gets a minus for not having an option to turn off PvP at all(I'd spend a lot longer playing with that option included)

Would you like an option to turn off personal PVP in the main mode?

  • Yes!

  • No

  • Haven't played the game yet
