Shenmue 3: A Nostalgic Return with Modern Twists

Publisher: Shibuya Productions · Deep Silver · ININ Games

Developer:  Ys Net

Also available on:  PC

The long-awaited sequel to Shenmue 2 started via a Kickstarter and was funded by the hardcore fans of the series (like myself). The story continues from the end of the second game, where Ryu and Shenhua leave the cave and head to Bailu Village in search of the other mirror and her lost father. The game follows the same concept as the original two, which is a good thing. The graphics are also in a very similar style but modernized.

In this game, you can collect herbs to sell for money and also collect capsule toys and sets again, plus gamble or take a job chopping wood. In the first part of the game, each day you have to go back to Shenhua's home to stay, and you can interact with her to hear more stories about her father or your current objective. Later on, when you move to another area, you have to stay in a hotel instead and can even get a forklift job at the docks like in the second game.

There are side missions in this one and martial arts schools to fight in, and street fighting too. Casinos return too, along with a boat casino DLC. Some parts look quite beautiful, and it has the exact same feel as the originals. One really cool feature is the phone cards you can buy/collect, which you can use to call characters from the first games to have conversations with; the characters sound the same too, and it is a really good nostalgic feeling. There are some parts where you have to solve things with Shenhua too, which I really like. Ren also returns.

There are a lot of shops to buy items or food from, and various games to play. You have to think for yourself about what to do or where to go like the other games, but you can ask locals again for help. Here's hoping for a Shenmue 4 and sooner!

Good points:

+Feels like the previous games

+Great sounds and music like the previous games too

+Lots of items to buy and missions

+More interactions with Shenhua and missions with her

+Graphics and scenery look gorgeous

+Being able to call some of the previous Characters to talk with

+Combat is decent

+Good continuation of the story

Bad points:

-Would have been nice to buy and change Shenhua's outfits instead of just the one DLC outfit, or be able to give her gifts and cooking ingredients/food

-Judo throws in combat should not have been removed at all

Grade: A+

Awesome effort and trilogy. Exactly like the previous Shenmue games and a must play for any real true fan of the previous two, or fans of martial arts or Asian culture in general.
